Lunch Break Presentation

Last of the Giants - Mitchell Dakelman
With the recent announcement by Union Pacific with a potential agreement with the Norfolk Southern Rail Corporation, that UP Big Boy #4014 will be visiting the eastern end of the United States later this year. With that in mind, our lunchtime program will consist of a classic railroad documentary.

The presentation is a 24 minute, Kodachrome and sound 16mm film, was initially released by the Union Pacific Railroad film department circa 1960. It gives us a brief history of the evolution of articulated steam locomotives and the ultimate development of their steam locomotive, 4-8+8-4, also nicknamed "Big Boy", as it was known as the world's largest steam locomotive built. Twenty-five Big Boys were built circa 1940-1941 by the American Locomotive Company. About eight examples survive, and the #4014, which was displayed in California, was selected as the best one to restore.

This film will provide the audience a glimpse how these mighty locomotives operated and were serviced in Laramie, where they were headquartered.

After Banquet Presentation

Painting Railroad History - Kevin Yackmack
The Keystone Division is pleased to welcome local artist Kevin Yackmack as the 2026 Jamboree’s Banquet speaker. Kevin’s presentation will focus on the process of scene selection through completed painting. Using watercolor as the primary medium, Kevin’s process also relies on pen, ink and pastel to complete the work. Several pieces have been judged prize worthy at local art shows.

These works along with others will be on display during the banquet presentation.

Born and raised in Fayette County Pa’s Coal and Coke region, Kevin’s interest in railroads can be traced back to his earliest memories of Monongahela Baldwin’s, Baltimore and Ohio coal trains and Western Maryland Alpha Jets. It’s these distant recollections that led to his interest in depicting them artistically. Utilizing personal photographs and the images of noted railroad photographers as reference, Kevin’s artwork aims to bring clarity, color, and context to these fleeting historical moments.
