Bring & Brag June 2025 Entries and Winners

The June Bring ā€˜n’ Brag category was Non-Revenue Cars, (including cabooses). We had five entries:

1st place went to Richard Reichenbach for his submission of his kitbashed Erie caboose in HO scale. He sliced the sides of this Silver Streak model and reassembled it to replicate the window spacing found in the blueprint (also displayed with a prototype photo). He built custom ladders and grab irons, and added Kadee 153 couplers and Caboose trucks.

2nd place went to Rick Montgomery for his Conrail N5c brown caboose, a type used for PPLX service behind coal trains. This model started as an undecorated Bowser kit, which he painted Rustoleum Espresso and Black, then applied K4 Conrail caboose decals and added metal wheels and couplers. He also provided photos of the kit on its sprues and a prototype image of CR 23091.

3rd place went to Mike DeSensi for his pair of N scale Sante Fe cabooses. Mike started by stripping and repainting Atlas RTR cabooses and adding Microscale decals. He also replaced the underframe with a Micro-Trains metal frame (milled to fit) and added their endrails and ladders as well. Following the prototype, he fabricated cupola roof grab irons out of N scale locomotive lift rings and brass wire. He also added Sunshine Models cupola wig-wags (hand operated wig-wags were used by conductors to signal the train was ready to move in the years before radio communication was common).

Two additional entries were submitted for the June contest.

Steve Ross brought this Pennsy N5c cabin car, which is an older Bowser kit, to which he added Eastern Car Works windows, styrene siding to represent wooden platform floors, and Kadee couplers. He also fabricated his own handrails from 0.015 diameter brass wire and applied them along with Tichy grab irons, painted safety yellow, and painted end railings and steps. He finished the model by weathering with Bragdon powders.
